Volume dips at Los Angeles Port

The Port of Los Angeles has reported a 7.2% decline in its June volume to 646,650 TEU this month. The drop has been attributed to the impact of two new lines which have shifted substantial business to Long Beach, USA:CMA-CGM to Pier J and MSC shifting some of its volume to the Hanjin Terminal at Pier T.

In the first six months of 2013 LA’s volume has fallen 7.46% to 3.71M TEU while Long Beach has increased 14.2% to 3.22M TEU. Most of Long Beach’s growth came in the first five months of the year, with June volumes up a much less pronounced 1.8% at the port.

Last year, LA handled 8.1M TEU, more than two million TEU more than Long Beach. If the results of the first half of the year continue to follow current trends, this gap is expected to halve by the end of 2013.
