DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight branch of German logistics giant Deutsche Post DHL, launched a new mobile app last month. The app, named “DGF Cargo Mobile Tracking”, is available for customers using iOS, Android and RIM smartphones and enables them to track and trace their sea and air freight shipments and view their shipping history free of charge.

Michael Young, Global Head of Marketing and Sales for DHL Global forwarding commented, “The “DGF Cargo Mobile Tracking” application provides increased visibility to customers as to the current status of their cargo movements, in real time, no matter where they are. Supply chain managers are often away from their desks and benefit from mobile solutions, which enable them to track time sensitive shipments and adapt their planning, where necessary. In an age of real time information availability, finger-tip convenience is a must for all supply chain professionals”

The development of the app shows how important it is for logistics and freight shipping providers such as DHL to keep pace with technological innovation. Competitor UPS also released a tracking app for parcel deliveries earlier this year, showing there is clearly a consumer demand for up-to-the-minute updates on the whereabouts of shipments.
