Etihad Airways, the flagship airline of the UAE recently reported a surge in the year-on-year tonnage of its cargo division for the month of July. The carrier reported a volume of 45,000 tonnes compared to 32,876 the previous year: an impressive increase in the currently sluggish air cargo market.
Kevin Knight, chief strategy and planning officer of Etihad, attributed the rise to an upturn in key export markets including India, Hong Kong and China. Results were also boosted by demand for foodstuffs in the Middle East for the holy month of Ramadan, much of the traffic from which came from the Netherlands.
In an interview with Air Cargo Week, Knight commented: "Over the past 12 months we have strengthened our global cargo business, expanded operations across new and existing trade lanes, seen demand continue to grow and in response, we have been able to add greater capacity via our growig passenger and freighter fleet."
